Paediatric Dentistry FAQs
When should my child start going to the dentist?
The Canadian Dental Association suggests that you take your young kid to the dentist before their first birthday or no later than six months after their first tooth appears.
How often should a child go to the dentist?
The Canadian Dental Association recommends dental examinations every six months for people of all ages to maintain good oral health. This is especially true for young children who are moving from baby teeth to permanent teeth. More regular appointments may be required depending on oral health.
Why are baby teeth important for my child?
Primary (baby) teeth are crucial for a variety of reasons. They not only aid in the formation of a path for permanent teeth to follow when they are ready to emerge, but they also help children speak clearly and chew naturally.
To ensure a long life with good oral health, you should introduce healthy oral hygiene habits and frequent dental check-ups to your child when they are young.
What happens during my child’s first visit?
The initial visit is usually brief and straightforward. In most cases, we concentrate on getting to know your child and providing you with basic dental information. The first visit is used to introduce the dental clinic to your child as a safe place to visit.
Dr. Sekhon and her team will examine your child’s teeth and search for any potential abnormalities with the gums and jaw after examining his or her medical history. We may conduct some cleaning if necessary.
We’ll also answer any questions you have about how to care for your child’s teeth as they grow, and we’ll give you materials with helpful hints you can use at home.
How can I prepare my child for the first dental appointment?
Maintaining a pleasant attitude is the best way to prepare for your child’s first visit to our clinic. Children pick up on their parents’ fears, so if you make negative comments about dentist visits, you can expect your child will anticipate a bad experience and act accordingly.
Tell your child that keeping their teeth and gums healthy is crucial, and that Dr Sekhon and her team will assist them in doing so. Keep in mind that our Team of dentists is specifically trained to deal with concerns and anxiety, and our staff excels in making youngsters feel at ease during treatment.
At what age is it appropriate to use toothpaste to clean my child's teeth?
You can start using toothpaste on the brush after your youngster has a few teeth. Use only a small amount for each cleaning and use fluoride-free toothpaste for children under the age of two, as too much fluoride can be harmful to young children.
After brushing, encourage your youngster to rinse and spit away the toothpaste to establish a lifelong habit he’ll need after he switches to fluoride toothpaste. After brushing, children naturally want to swallow the toothpaste, but ingesting too much fluoride toothpaste can discolour teeth.
You should brush your child’s teeth until your child is able to do so, which normally happens around the age of six or seven.
